Artur Y. Akkerman was born in Odessa, Ukraine. He spent his childhood summers at a small two-family-shared house, at the shores of the Black Sea, on the outskirts of the city.

Due to a sudden rise of Anti-Semitism following the collapse of Soviet Union and its economy, his family fled to United States in 1992. Los Angeles became his home during his early teenage years. Upon completing Woodrow Wilson High School, Artur pursued a BA in psychology at the University of California Santa Cruz. After his BA, he enrolled in a masterís program at the School of Social Work at New York University. In 2002, he received an MSW and currently resides in the Los Angeles area.
